Question description

You have been given the Henderson Hasselbalch equation in the module covering buffers as a short cut for solving equilibrium problems involving buffers. Derive this equation from the equilibrium equation describing a mixture of a weak acid and its conjugate base. Start by writing the definition of the Ka and then think of taking the log of both sides. Also this is a good example of letting x be small to simplify your equation. When substances dissolve in water, they form solutions which contain positive and negative
ions. Ions in solutions can be as a result of the following processes. First, for ionic compounds,
the ions dissociate and become distributed in the solution (Parsons, 1997).

The second case is when a substance reacts with a solvent (water). When this occurs, chemical
bonds are altered. For example, HCl gas is a molecular compound that is covalently bonded. In
water, the gas donates a proton to water molecule leading to the formation of H3O+ and a
conjugate (anion (Parsons, 1997)).
