HIST 111 (F18, J. KIM)
Midterm Examination
Due Sunday October 14, 2018 before 10:00 PM on Canvas
This will be an examination that will test your knowledge and understanding of the course thus
specific example, I expect you to cite exact page numbers and state from where your evidence

You may not reference outside sources. You may (and should) reference the primary sources
(texts, images, music, videos, etc.), textbook, articles and lecture material. If you refer to a
comes. To this end, you must cite your sources in footnotes using Chicago Style (see below)
Your responses should have an overall argumentthesis at the end of your Introduction; topic
taken from the primary sources (all visual and written evidence you have encountered in the
class) that you analyze and apply to your argument within the body paragraphs; and a
concluding paragraph that restates your thesis and wraps up your essay. In short, write an
argumentative essay that addresses the following prompt:
sentences that support the thesis at the beginning of each body paragraph; supporting evidence
ESSAY PROMPT
Who were “unruly” women between the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries in
colonial America and later, the United States (period of time starting with European
arrivals up until the nineteenth century (1800s), and why and how were they considered
unruly? In responding to this question, make sure you consider the variety of women and
their experiences. When brainstorming, think about women of different cultural backgrounds,
skin color, class/wealth, immigrant status, profession, religious backgrounds, etc. What
qualities about these women made colonial folks consider them unruly? What female
ideologies did colonial society value that would in turn make certain women ideal and others
unruly?
Reference/cite via footnote format a minimum of six different primary sources or
textbook examples to present as evidence, but there is no maximum number so cite
away!
Brainstorm primary sources → Topic sentences Subject → Thesis
You cannot find the answer" in the textbook, lecture material or primary sources. You
must analyze (make connections) among all of your reading material, especially the
primary sources; only then can you make an argumentative thesis that you can call your
own.
The "answer" to the thesis is not a response restating the prompt: this is your subject.
• After reading the prompt, brainstorm and organize your thoughts into the four aspects of
history: social, cultural, political and economic.

Important and Final Reminders
Plagiarism is taking anyone else's work and claiming it as your own. This includes all of
the materials that we have read in this class and my lectures. You need to properly cite
your sources when referring to them. Also, do yourself a favor and stay off the internet

when preparing for this exam. Lack of information is not the issue for student essays,
but rather, student analysis of the primary sources given to them. In short, I am
interested in what YOU think about everything we have read together.
Computers crash. This, however, is not a reasonable excuse for your failure to turn in
hard-drive but also onto an external drive. Google Docs is also a good way to avoid the
any part of your exam. It is your responsibility to save your work not onto your
heartbreaking consequences of hard drive crashes. It is your responsibility to leave
ample time to deal with such issues that may arise.
I will not accept any late work barring true, personal, and documentable emergencies as
explained in the course syllabus.
How to Write an Effective Essay
An effective and successful essay makes an argument that is substantiated with evidence,
and is clear and organized so that the reader follows the writer's line of thought.
Introductory Paragraph
Introduce the subject
1. Provide the historical backdrop and address the "who, what, when and where” of
historical writing
2. At the end, state the thesis
i. The thesis should be a single sentence that is succinct, debatable and
argumentative, i.e., In medieval Europe, people believed that the supernatural
operated in day-to-day life, either by helping or hurting their livelihood.
ii.
The thesis should not list the topics that will be discussed, i.e., In medieval
Europe, people believed in witches, the Devil and miracles.
Supporting Paragraphs
The beginning of each paragraph is the topic sentence
1. Here, using the aforementioned examples, take the topics of witches, the Devil and
miracles and make separate paragraphs out of them
a. Make sure you address the social, political, economic and cultural context as
much as can be applied
2. Present, explain, and relate the evidence to the topic
Concluding Paragraph
Restate (not repeat) the thesis
4
Elaborate on the thesis, i.e., In medieval Europe, people believed in forces outside their
control that made huge impacts on their lives. Witches could harm them and their loved
ones while devoted prayer could result in a miracle that saved their crops (and their

families)....
How to Tell a Strong Thesis Statement from a Weak One'
1. A strong thesis statement takes some sort of stand.
Remember that your thesis needs to show your conclusions about a subject. For example, if you are
writing a paper for a class on fitness, you might be asked to choose a popular weight-loss product to
evaluate. Here are two thesis statements:
There are some negative and positive aspects to the Banana Herb Tea Supplement.
This is a weak thesis statement. First, it fails to take a stand. Second, the phrase negative and positive
aspects is vague.
Because Banana Herb Tea Supplement promotes rapid weight loss that results in the loss of
muscle and lean body mass, it poses a potential danger to customers.
This is a strong thesis because it takes a stand, and because it's specific.
2. A strong thesis statement justifies discussion.
Your thesis should indicate the point of the discussion. If your assignment is to write a paper on kinship
systems, using your own family as an example, you might come up with either of these two thesis
statements:
My family is an extended family.
This is a weak thesis because it merely states an observation. Your reader won't be able to tell the point
of the statement, and will probably stop reading.
While most American families would view consanguineal marriage as a threat to the nuclear
family structure, many Iranian families, like my own, believe that these marriages help reinforce
kinship ties in an extended family.
This is a strong thesis because it shows how your experience contradicts a widely-accepted view. A good
strategy for creating a strong thesis is to show that the topic is controversial. Readers will be interested in
reading the rest of the essay to see how you support your point.
3. A strong thesis statement expresses one main idea.
Readers need to be able to see that your paper has one main point. If your thesis statement expresses
more than one idea, then you might confuse your readers about the subject of your paper. For example:
Companies need to exploit the marketing potential of the Internet, and Web pages can provide
both advertising and customer support.
