Currently, there exist very few laws that address the issue of Big Data and its use by organizations for business purposes. This brings in the matter of ethics and whether the use of Big Data can be considered as an ethical practice (Buchanan, 2017). The ethical considerations with regards to Big Data came into being after the Facebook Research scandal. The scandal arose when Facebook allowed Cambridge Analytica to access relevant information of its users and the company utilized it to predict how the users of Facebook would vote during the US presidential election. From that occurrence, the ethics surrounding Big Data has been questioned. There are several issues raised with regards to Big Data by stakeholders, and they revolve around access and inclusiveness of Big Data, credit and transparency, and lastly confidentiality and privacy (Rivers and Lewis, 2014). This research paper seeks to focus on three key questions when it comes to Big Data and Ethics. These questions include: ➢ Access to Big Data and concerns about the ownership of this data. This will primarily focus on the ownership of personal data and what steps collectors of the data should adhere to. In addition to that, it answers questions of instances where ownership and collection of data is unethical (Zimmer, 2018). ➢ What are the Code of Ethics Companies that sell Big Data should adhere to? : Moral Conduct that sellers of Big Data should conform to ➢ Ethical Concerns of Governments Utilizing Social Media sites and their use of big data? There exist numerous ethical issues like privacy, data ownership and transparency that
companies should put into consideration when creating big data plans. Securing this data via big
data implementations is moderately important since the gathered data is not essentially secret and
can be regarded confidential implying that it can remain unshared with any foreign party.
The biggest question to access to Big Data and concerns about the ownership of data, is
whether the customer keeps the ownership of data which belongs to him/her or losses it
immediately upon accepting the organization's terms and conditions. There seems to be no solid
answer to this dilemma, but from a critical point of view, customers should have exclusive rights
to the raw or original data initially provided. The utilization of this data should then be granted to
the organization and the permission to utilize it should not be withdrawn except when special
cases that could adversely affect the customer occur. The organization would keep ownership of
the derived data (data got from the analysis, manipulation of the original raw data that cannot be
reverted to the raw form).
