There are many criminal based theories that can be used to provide different
approaches in the analysis of crime or a general conflict. The knowledge of these
theories is essential for crime identification, provision of justice for the people and also
resolution of justice. Any individual involved in the justice department understands the
need for the application of these theories to help in the understanding of how crime
works. The main four main approaches of these theories are based on classical
understanding in which a crime can be caused by individuals and personalities as a
matter of free will (Bates, 2005).

The punishment provided is used to deter the crime from taking place. The
second approach is biological approach that is used as a major determinant of behavior.
In this research, the understanding of crime can be genetic and be used to stop criminal
behavior from taking place. Sociological approaches also provide an understanding of
crime from the idea of benefits and sociological conditions for that crime to take place.
In this paper, several approaches and theories have been used in the identification and
understanding of criminal behavior. These include the strain theory, the rational choice
theory and the labeling theory.

Rational Choice Theory

Rational choice theory can be explained as the theoretical understanding of
the social behaviors in the society. The justice department, this theory can be used to
explain individual choices and preferences over other individuals. It is clear that there

are many choices and alternatives in the society for an individual to do so. The theory
has been sufficient in providing an explanation of the reasons why people act in a
certain way, the probabilities of their actions, the benefits and the costs for engaging in
such behaviors. As an individual is making certain choices, it is evident that they must
identify the behaviors that can be considered as sociable.

According to rational choice theory, an individual is likely to engage in crime
for them to fulfill things that exist in the society such as status, money and sex. The
accomplishment of these needs usually guide an individual to achieve improved choices
and make ethical decisions on the choices they have made. This always guides them to
make decisions that are constrained by their ability, means and also the available
information (Clarkson, 2011).

Studies have suggested that there exists a negative relationship between
police presence and crime occurrence. In areas where there is increased police
presence such as Chicago, the level of crime is high. The increase in manpower causes
the people to increase their presence over time. There is a need to engage in
community policing to help reduce the impact of crime and deviant behavior affecting
individuals in the society.

Controlling the environmental perceptions and the risk assumptions of
criminal behavior can be a better tool for ensuring that crime has been managed over
time. Using the rational approach, it is clear that decision making can be reduced to
manageable levels that shall ensure the management of crime as it has occurred in the
society. This would help to manage crime and ensure that there theoretical models for

effective understanding and punishment for the crime conducted has been effective
