Final Paper (due the end of Week 7)

An important component of this course is the research paper. The paper can be on a topic of your choice, but it must relate directly to the course material. You must use at least four academic bibliographic sources (paper or online) in addition to the required course readings. Wikepedia.com is not an acceptable academic reference at this university.

The paper should be between 8 and 12 pages in length, not including the title page and reference list.

The research paper should include an introduction of the topic, a body in which the topic is developed and references correctly cited in APA format, and a well-defined conclusion. For more information on how the essay exam questions and the research paper will be graded, see “Grading” below.

I strongly suggest that, as part of your research, you take advantage of the university’s online library link. There is a wide variety of resources there including many full-text papers and articles. This may be of particular advantage to any of you who are deployed and do not have traditional library resources available to you.

I also recommend that you contact me with the topic of your paper before you begin your research. The topic you choose may be too broad or too narrow, and a discussion may help you to focus so that your learning will be maximized and your paper will be the best it can be.

You must submit your final papers through Turnitin.com. This is a site that checks for plagiarism, as well as providing resources to assist you in preparing your paper. Be careful in your gathering of resources for your paper and do not copy directly from your sources! Your paper is due at the end of Week 7 of class.

As is clearly stated in the Student Handbook, you must submit an original paper for each course that you take at APU/AMU. It is not acceptable to use the same paper for more than one class. You can use the same topic and change the focus if you like, but your work must be original to this course. Be assured that Turnitin.com will let me know if you copy too much of a previous work!

Often, students submit papers with grammatical errors that are not picked up with Spell Check. One technique that might work for you is to read your paper aloud, to yourself or someone else, before you submit it. Often reading it aloud and seeing the words on the paper simultaneously will help you to pick up these grammatical errors that ultimately will cost you grading points.

Research papers will be graded using the Writing assignment grading rubric, found in the classroom.

SHORTAGE OF NURSES

Introduction
The healthcare sector plays a vital role in the well-being of any country. It is one of the
basic and most fundamental sectors of a nation as it is what helps in keeping the people safe and
healthy at all times. It is therefore very important to constantly check on the running and the
operations of the entire sector. Through doing this, it is possible to know the ups and downs of
the sector and act accordingly upon them.
The Shortage of Nurses
There are some factors that have always affected the health sector and done so in a
negative way. Among the challenges that the healthcare sector has faced is the shortage of
nurses. This has gone a long way to affect how the sector functions and derailed its growth at
some point. This paper will aim to elaborate more on how the shortage of nurses in the health
sector has affected the entire care system. It will also look into how these might have implicated
the sector as well.
Nurses play a major role in ensuring that the healthcare system is functional and performs
its duties smoothly and effectively. When they are happy they tend to deliver quality services,
and this is exactly what we expect from them because unlike many other professions, they take
care of a delicate item, and that is the human life. A study has shown that in recent years, the
number of nurses has been declining and this is not only shocking but dangerous as well.
Many critics and those who are a bit concerned have gone to research on why this is
happening as it may end up in a situation where a fundamental pillar like the health sector is
crippled to a point where life cannot be easily saved when the need arises. Through various

research methods, there have been discovered some of the main reasons that have contributed
directly or indirectly to the shortage of nurses in the healthcare system.
Among the factors that have led to the shortage of nurses are;
Poor working conditions-Many conditions in which many nurses find themselves
working under are not only unbearable but also pose a threat to their very health. Nurses through
their Unions have gone ahead to demonstrate and have a variety of industrial actions to raise
concerns about the status of their working conditions. It has come to the public's realization that
the environment these nurses work in are not bearable at all(Aiken, Sloane, Bruyneel, Van den
Heede, & Sermeus, 2017).
Take for example the case of Rose-Not her real name-who once was recorded in a
national newspaper talking about how an average day for a nurse looks like. She went ahead and
explained how she wakes up in the morning at around 5 am as that is the time when her shift
begins. She heads down to the maternity wards where she works and has to attend to over 3
expectant mothers. She has her colleagues who complain a lot of the environment within which
they work under.
It also came as a shock to many that Rose is not offered any meals except for the evening
tea which is taken without anything else. Her shift which begins at 5 am in the morning ends at
around 7 p.m. Throughout such a long shift she only has a cup of tea to walk her through such a
hectic day.
It didn't come as a surprise when...
