EMOTIONS AND BIASES IN THE WORKPLACE
Question1: How and why do emotions and biases positively and negatively
influenced behavior in the workplace? How have/will you incorporate crucial conversation
principles to be more effective at work?
Emotions and perceptual bias are natural human aspects that play different roles. Emotion
and bias affect such cognitive functions as planning, attention allocation and decision-making in
an organization. It is therefore essential to understand how our feeling and thinking affect the
people we interact with in our workplaces. Human beings are subjectively biased throughout
their evaluations on themselves and the kind of relationships they take part in. Emotions affect
the decision-making process. Emotions induce biases during decision making. For example,
anger and fear have significant, and sometimes, opposite effects on perceptions. Emotion and
biases also affect the outcomes of a specific venture. For instance, extreme negative emotions
affect how individuals value short-term results notwithstanding the long-term effects. Emotions
and biases also affect risk-related decision making. Studies show that low emotional experience
levels are associated with higher performance levels (Lerner, Valdesolo, & Kassam, 2015).
Emotions and bias affect our behaviors as they influence such attributes as thought,
physical responses, decisions, and actions, as discussed below.
Positive emotions like excitement have positive effects on an individual's relationship
with workmates. Positive emotions also are important to the organization as they bring about the
accomplishment of assigned tasks in time, enhanced intellectual functionality and persistence.
