Reliability of a Narrator
A reliable narrator is assessed through his or her degree of proximity in the values which
a given author intended to communicate. In essence, the fictional or factual context of a narrative
is availed to the readers through the reliability of a narrator. Therefore the knowledgeability of a
narrator is measured through his or her incorporation of characters and situations in a given
storyline. Moreover, being reliable implies that the narrator has the capability of creating a more
partial account based on his or her characters about his or her personal life.
According to Dundun by Denis Johnson, the narrator is using a protagonist and merely
some witnesses to build the flow of the story. However, he does not implicitly render honesty of
events that happen to them. It is difficult for the reader to accept the statements of fact without
judgment. Due to the unreliability of the narrator, there is a revelation of events that are
interpreted differently when compared to the author's storyline. Moreover, he does not give a
clear and systematic flow of events as they occur. The flow of activities is another crucial
