Police professionalism refers to the requisite skills that are essential in discharging the role of maintenance of law and order in an effective manner. Professionalism also involves the exercising of proper judgment and the demonstration of ethical behavioral tendencies (Barker, 2011). The outcomes of higher levels of professionalism among police officers include more confidence among the members of the public. Police professionalism is directly related to the process of trust-building between the police officers and the members of the public (Thomas, 2010). Trust between the two faction leads to cooperation which is important in the maintenance of law and order under the theory of community policing and information sharing.

Examples of events that point toward police professionalism include the adoption of polite measures towards building trust with the public (Sklansky et al., 2011). The cooperation is particularly enabled through education and training approaches that lay the foundation for effective dissemination of information from both sides to avert any potential crimes. Another act of police professionalism is evident in the modern policing initiatives that lead to the enactment of policies that emphasize proper behavior and ethical conduct among members of the police unit (Thomas, 2010). The two initiatives by the police are highly similar in the sense that they aim towards attending to the needs of the general public. Moreover, the initiatives are geared towards the building of trust that could lead to a healthier relationship between the police and the public as suggested under the community policing approach.

Some of the aspects that could help in bolstering the levels of professionalism among the police include the introduction of the requirement on higher levels of education for the potential police recruits (Barker, 2011). Moreover, the use of constant training under the continuing professional development rubric could also serve as a guide to enhance police professionalism.
