Historical events and their impact on BCP/ DR
When businesses face catastrophic events that end up threatening their existence, it is very
important to have a fallback plan that can enable them to continue operation even at minimal
productivity levels before proper recovery plans can be enacted. As such, most business defines
the minimum requirements for proper operations in case of a disaster. These requirements include
staff number, important IT infrastructure, and premises. In the past, major brands have faced tough
times trying to recover from such situations with both success stories and failures. Below, we shall
look at recent events in the business world that have changed public perceptions and businesses’
habits.
Massive data breach
Companies who handle very sensitive data and have millions of clients have much to worry
about when malicious intruders turn their attention to them. Over the years, some of the biggest
brands have suffered catastrophic data breaches that might have crippled their operations and
damaged their public image. One such company is Target that suffered the biggest data breach
ever witnessed in the US history. Having millions of customers, the data breach involved 110
million credit card numbers and more personal data like names and home addresses. The company
the breach led to a lot of loses amounting to $148 million and share prices falling sharply. The
company’s CEO was removed to bring in fresh faces that might help win the trust of the people
who had deserted them in large numbers after the incident (Kude, 2015).
Target Company lacked any coherent and pre-planned approach to their situation which
led to things getting worse when they admitted that they had witnessed several fake
