Common sense
Common sense by Thomas Maine is a pamphlet that was published in 1776 that called
for America’s independence from the British as well as the establishment of a democratic
government after independence. In the pamphlet, Maine documented all the reasons America
should strive for its freedom from British rule. His disdain for the monarchy is well expressed as
he finds the logic behind this form of government flawed. He points out that trying to rule
another country across the ocean was very impractical. It was an administrative nightmare
because it took months for news to travel from England to America. This made it impossible to
invoke laws or address issues effectively since communication took too long, and as a result,
there was no coherency between England and its colony. Through this controversial document,
Thomas Maine was able to become one of the biggest advocates for the American Revolution; he
was able to unite the colonists by opening their eyes on how the British were holding them back

is meant to protect the citizenry from their own vices. The role of the government according to
Maine is to protect life, liberty, and property. With this understanding, he goes on to demonstrate

The British system according to Paine has no checks and balances because the monarchy in itself
is too powerful and this eventually breeds tyranny. He even uses biblical references to show that
God does not approve of kings. He only allowed kings to exist after the Jews demanded one. In
