Professional accountability is an essential component in nursing practice and patient safety. It is being responsible for one's actions, judgment, and omissions as they relate to lifelong learning, maintaining competency, and upholding both quality patient care outcomes and standards of the profession (ANA, 2004).
Accountability is integral to professional practice. Nurses use their professional knowledge, and skills to decide based on evidence for best practice and the patient safety as they must be able to justify the decisions they make ( UKEssays , 2013). Example of a nurse offered as needed medication to manage a patient's behavior.
Legal accountability for nurses has implications for the standards of record keeping. A nurse should be able to be obtained informed consent as these will provide evidence of the actions and decisions made by them if needed ( UKEssays , 2013). Nurses must be sure that they can always justify their actions and that they are accountable for the actions of others to whom they delegate.
Clinical governance of a system where organizations that are accountable for continuously improving quality services and safeguarding high standards of care to patients and families in a healthy environment for optimal care outcome, ( UKEssays , 2013).
