How to use failure to improve your vision as a leader
Many times, it has been said that individuals learn more from their failures than their
success. Slip-ups, embarrassments or missteps are no significant causes for hanging one’s head
or ringing one’s hand. By far, mistakes could be the most effective and powerful teachers. The
lessons learned stick with individuals for a lifetime. Mistakes are in many ways gifts in disguise.
By assessing what might have gone wrong and also what went right, it could translate the
learning into leadership behaviors, skills and perspective that are more effective. Failures grab
the attention of individuals and have a way of putting problems that are crucial right in people’s
faces (Alvesson & Kärreman, 2016). They single out things that need fixing. These mistakes
help individuals notice their choices and actions.
Sometimes when one has done an error, the first instinctive reaction is to fix the blame
somewhere else. A classic one is that, the homework was eaten by the dog. Recently, two guests
who were to attend an up-coming radio talk show, were given wrong dates by the radio station’s
manager. Once he realized what he had done, he resulted to playing the blame game. Some of the
excuses included “Someone should have pointed this out.” Or, “that was meant for secretary’s
department not mine.” However, he took responsibility of his actions and called back to
apologize. Therefore, it was important that the calendar be reviewed carefully in order to provide
correct information (Alvesson & Kärreman, 2016). In addition, taking responsibility for a slip-up
isn’t fun. However, the act of doing just that demonstrates that there’s an opportunity to do it
right the next time. Mistakes push individuals to examine their direction; if they may be off
track. When attempting a project and it fails, it is a clear sign that the choice was unwise then. It
helps in finding out what should be done or not.
