Introduction
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is the use of implanted electrodes in the brain to produce
therapeutic electrical impulses. DBS has a wide range of use in the control and management of
chronic diseases and syndromes such as Parkinson's disease, dystonia, essential tremor,
Tourette's syndrome among others. One of the most common use of DBS in these and many
other conditions is the treatment of motor and neuropsychiatric disorders such as obsessivecompulsive disorder which sometimes proves resistant to treatments. Applied in a wide scope of
mechanisms, DBS can produce a local and a chain-reaction type of electrical and neurochemical
stimulation, regulation of oscillation and increase synaptic plasticity. In the future, there are
hopes to access its ability to induce neuroprotection and neurogenesis using DBS (Herrington,
Cheng, & Eskandar, 2016). Deep brain stimulation is an effective management solution for
patients suffering from chronic motion disorders and therefore important in improving their
lifestyle.
