Question Description

In this assignment, we will continue to build upon the foundations laid by the readings and coursework up to this point. Consider the following problem: Astronauts on extended missions, such as those who may go to Mars, may have increased anxiety levels that can be very problematic in enclosed areas or in space suits. You wish to determine which method of anxiety reduction is best without affecting safety or astronaut performance/health. The three options are: medication, meditation practice, or both.

Based upon this information, write Section III of a research proposal (as outlined in Chapter 5 of the book) to include the data needed, how the data would be collected methodology, and treatment(s). Be sure to use a correlational, quasi-experimental, or experimental design as outlined in the readings. Table 7.1 is helpful in insuring that you adequately describe your design.

The assignment should be at least two (2) pages (size 12 font, double spaced) not including references, title pages, figures, or tables.

We are aware of the fact that millions of dollars are spent on the health and safety of the astronauts with those metallic boxes, which gives them the feeling as if they are grabbed and isolated from the entire universe. This creates the extreme situation which easily spread in the minds of people that outer space is an exception. National Aeronautics and space administration has made an initiative for the health and safety of the astronauts with the project named Aerospace security and psychology, the project is related to the field of medicine which is tried on the mental health of the astronauts (Astronaut Health and Performance, n.d.). Discussion With the existence of the human being; gravity can be one of the most important mental comforts that we need. Our Survival entirely depends on our ability to distinguish how we can walk, jump, move without falling. Our brain combines the data with visual information on the basis of our eyes, the pressure information from our feet and the position information from muscles and joints continuously track the orientation of our bodies in context to the gravity. The feeling of anxiety occurs because of difficulty to communicate with the rest of the world. During the space flight, various kinds of physical changes occur to the human body which includes the changes in the brain, eyes, heart, and blood vessels. Various studies have been done to prevent the health-related issues for the astronauts during the flight. Method of anxiety reduction The treatment method to be used for the given situation includes both medication and meditation. According to the research done by NASA, one out of every six astronauts was ASTRONAUTS ON EXTENDED MISSIONS 3 elected who were considered as physically and mentally sound. The training was given to them in parts. The initial part of the training was the behavioral medicine which is utilized to analyze the mental health of the person before the launch. In the remaining parts of the project, the training was given to identify the situation of psychological risks to the members. The outcome of the project was positive and 95% of the astronauts were able to overcome the difficult situation (Astronaut Health and Performance, n.d.). As per the reports by NASA, the human nervous system quickly changes with the change in environment. At the beginning of the launch, various kinds of problem have been seen as hand coordination, perceptual illusions, etc. As the astronaut spend more time in the space, they adapt to the changes. The medication is believed to be the most expensive countermeasure for the sleep disturbance during the spaceflight (Patel, 2016). The medication helps to maintain the proper sleeping hours. However, the use of meditation is the best medicine to relieve oneself from stress. The less dependency people are on medication the better we will be. Research methodology To proceed with the research process, the data is collected from both primary and secondary sources. The research is required to be carried out for medication and meditation practices. The secondary data is widely available in the form of research journals, books, internet, etc. Apart from this, the reports generated by the government agencies can also be used. The primary data can be collected from the astronauts or the aviation professionals who often go for space tour. These questions can be asked in the form of a survey regarding the medication and meditation. The research design selected is the experimental research design because the analysis will include various experiments on the basis of medication and meditation. For instance, the ASTRONAUTS ON EXTENDED MISSIONS 4 group of astronauts can be divided into parts where few of them will be given the medication and the others are not (Patel, 2016). The results can be analyzed after a few days of the medication. Similarly, the other group will be taught about the meditation that will help them to relieve themselves from the stress and the results will be analyzed after some days. This research design is further categorized into pretest and post-test control group which will depict the changes before and after the particular treatment. Conclusion There are many way that we can provide comfort to astronauts while in space. These can have advantageous for space professionals as the potential threat can be controlled with the help of internal validity. With these designs we can observe the impact of treatment on the groups and devise the best way to combat the stress that astronauts have while in space. Second, you need to consider the specific ways to assess the variables. You can use questionnaires, biosensors, or both. Moreover, what will the specific meditation group do that can be quantified or explained. If everyone is doing different types of meditation then we are unsure which, if any, are effective. Third, how many research participants and over what time period will the study last? Will the study last one week, four weeks, etc. Since it is a comparison you need baseline vs. post test data for comparison. Finally, which statistical test will be used? What is the alpha to ensure type I or II errors. A detailed data analysis plan is highly important for reliability and validity of data. I find this course to the hardest as it is helping you develop a research proposal with no prior knowledge of how to do it. Each section builds towards the end.
