Introduction
Healthcare workers are often confounded by the violence of physical and verbal nature as
well as threats as they undertake in their mandate which has contributed immensely in the
healthcare workers fearing for their wellbeing. Lisa Tenney, RN, of the Maryland Emergency
Nurses Association makes claims that she has been spat on, kicked, shoved, pushed, kicked,
punched, scratched and even bitten as she undertakes her mandate. She says that additionally she
has been threatened and abused verbally to the extent that she needed a security escort to her car
(The Joint Commission, 2018). Violence imposed on the healthcare workers in the workplace is
surprising whilst verbal abuse directed at health care providers is more often than not
disregarded.
Regardless of the magnitude and time of threat, it is important each episode is reported to
the leaders, law enforcement officers as well as internal security and an incident report modified
forthwith in a bid, so, an analysis can be conducted so more informed decisions can be made on
