Task 1: Professional Nursing Practice

Introduction:

The purpose of this task is to develop a working knowledge of nursing theory, nursing ethics, and professional accountability and apply these concepts to your professional clinical practice. You will be required to think about real-life scenarios and how they relate to nursing codes in your professional practice.

Requirements:

Your submission must be your original work. No more than a combined total of 30% of the submission and no more than a 10% match to any one individual source can be directly quoted or closely paraphrased from sources, even if cited correctly. You must use the rubric to direct the creation of your submission because it provides detailed criteria that will be used to evaluate your work. Professional roles and values
Need theory was developed by Virginia Henderson and it was derived from Henderson’s
practice and education. The theory’s goal was to provide a unique focus on the nursing profession.
The need theory emphasizes on the significance of growing a patient’s freedom to foster continued
healing process after hospitalization. According to Henderson, human need is the integral focus of
nursing practice which has influenced theory developments on patient’s needs and how nursing
can be significant in achieving these needs. The need theory also addresses four major concepts
such as; environment, individual, health and nursing (Watson, 1999). The need theory assists
nurses implement excellent nursing practices since they are able to provide suitable conditions in
which patients are able to independently perform the fourteen components identified in the theory
model. The fourteen components represents a holistic approach to nursing which influences
excellent nursing practices in delivering patient needs. The needs theory fits my professional
practice since as a nurse our central focus is patient needs and we endeavor to ensure that patients
can independently continue their healing process after hospitalization.

The most prominent historical nursing figures whose contributions have had a great
influence in the field of nursing are Clara Barton and Florence Nightingale. Clara Barton was
famously known as “the angel of the battlefield” and she was responsible for the foundation of the
American Red Cross. Barton’s foundation of the American Red Cross had a great influence on the
nursing practice. Florence Nightingale also identified as “the lady with the lamp,” was an
influential nurse that made a great impact in both medicine and the nursing profession that has
transcended to today’s World. Clara Barton was responsible for the establishment of the American
Red Cross in the United States that changed nursing practices in the battlefield while Florence

Nightingale is considered to the person who established the nursing profession since she turned
nursing into a respectable profession. Nightingale published her first text book on nursing
education that provided guidelines into the nursing profession. The contributions from the two
historical figures has greatly influenced my nursing profession practices like for instance, I still
implement the guidelines provided in Nightingales book where I generally observe my patients to
be able to make the right diagnosis of the symptoms. Barton’s has influenced my nursing practices
