FROM SCIENCE FICTION TO SCIENTIFIC FACT- JOURNAL 5.
The War of the Worlds is set in Victorian London, at a time when the belief system was
clearly defined. The belief about good and evil, moral right and wrong being clearly defined was
widely accepted by the society of the time. It is at this time that a man called Wells, fuelled by
curiosity and the desire for new understandings embarks on Science fiction in pursuit of his
passions in writing. It is at this time that Wells publishes his book on The War of Worlds.
Wells has a stable job as a teacher, has a girlfriend and has got a family. In the eyes of the
society, Wells is a fine young man doing well with his life, as per the social expectations. His
girlfriend doesn’t support his pursuit of writing because she believes Wells is stable with the job
of teaching and he should concentrate on starting a family. He is a man that can be said to be in
equilibrium, but he decides to upset the equilibrium by leaving his family and girlfriend behind for
a new life in the capital. Wells’ single act of leaving his seemingly stable life, job and family to go
to the capital to pursue his imaginations exemplifies a change in the social belief systems as he
practices individual mobility to go to the capital. In the eyes of the society that he leaves behind,
his is a sudden change in the belief in the stability of life. His decision is a microcosm of the
sweeping changes in social belief systems that follow later, and therefore, in some way, serve as a
warning to the society of the time that things are boun...
