Health effects of soda and other sugar beverages
Introduction
The consumption of soda and other sugar beverages has been on the rise in the recent
past. With the increase of consumption rates of such drinks comes an increase of health risks
whose effects could hinder achieving one of the main goals of Healthy People 2020 which is to
Attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature
death. A number of organizations have raised concerns over this matter and as well conducted
informing consumers of the dangers of this risk and more especially seeking to reduce the
consumption levels of these drinks especially among children who most of them have now
become addicted to these drinks without being aware of the dangers they are exposing
themselves to. As much as the health awareness campaigns achieving some significant results,
approximation indicates that an average American still consumes150 calories of sugar-sweetened
beverages on a daily basis and on average 66% of children and 77% of adolescents consume at
least one of these drinks every day. Some of the health risks related to the consumption of such
drinks include weight gain, liver diseases, insulin resistance, increased risk of type 2 diabetes and
heart diseases as well as addiction.
Before looking into the details of the risks, it is essential to evaluate the kind of content
consumed as a result of drinking soda and other sugar drinks. The consumption of sugar
sweetened beverages contributes to up to 11% of the calories gained by an individual. Health
studies also indicate that each 12- ounce soft drink that children consume per day increases their

chances of becoming obese by 60% and after consumption of an equivalent amount, the most
appropriate remedy is engaging in rigorous exercise like vigorous bicycle riding for
approximately 30 minutes (O’Dowd, 2015). These are just some of the most important facts that
sugar sweetened beverage consumers should know to help them avoid some of the risks
discussed below:
