UCOR-1600-17, FQ18: Country Report Assignment
To help you prepare for the role-playing simulation towards the end of the quarter, please research and write a
country report (7-10 double-spaced pages, excluding references or appendices). It is worth 100 points in total
and will be weighted as 10% of your course grade (see the grading rubric below).
As a backgrounder to busy diplomats and professionals, the country report offers an informational background
summary and analysis in the following areas about “your country,” i.e., the country you are assigned to
represent in the role-playing simulations from the list below:
Geography (e.g., territorial size, bordering countries, population, capital, natural resources, geographic
regions, climate zones, major descriptive points, etc.);
Brief modern history (e.g., milestones in modern history, influential individuals/groups, war/armed
conflict, etc.)
National symbol and icons (e.g., national anthem, flag, motto, heroes, cultural icons, food, etc.)
Economy (e.g., GDP, GDP per capita, major trading partners, major economic advantages and
challenges, etc.)
Political system (e.g., form of government, president, prime minister, legislature, last elections, political
parties, recent political development and upheavals, etc.);
Foreign policy orientations (e.g., priorities in foreign policy, traditional foreign policy stance or
approach, major allies and rivals, etc.)
Membership in international organizations (e.g., membership or non-membership in key international
organizations, key international treaties signed, ratified, or not ratified, roles in the United Nations);
A major news story in “your country” in the past month.
Begin your country report with a proper title and a short introduction. Use subtitles or sections to organize the
report. Fill in the textual information and insert tables and charts as appropriate under each section. Cite your
sources of information and follow the formatting and citation guidelines on page 6 of the syllabus. Submit the
complete report by 5 p.m., Wednesday, October 24th via Canvas. The late assignment policy applies, as
detailed in the syllabus).
