Running Head: CYBER SECURITY
A Research Paper about Cyber Security
The invention and development of the computer and internet has turned the world into a village.
This is enabled by the eased communication between people and organizations which in turn
come with many other advantages such as globalization. This doesn’t mean it has no challenges.
There are several challenges led by cybercrime. Computer and internet are key in the 21st century
and we cannot thrive without them. This means we have to work on the challenges and develop
strategies to address these issues. That’s collectively known as cyber security. This paper will
define what it is, how serious it is, possible sources of threats, possible intents, legal views, what
to do if one is a victim and preventive measures. By the end of this paper, the reader will be able
to employ various preventive measures while dealing with computers.
We normally share information through internet, store data in various databases and perform
various activities such as programming a certain system using our computers. There is a certain
way through which these activities are realized such as through the cables, coding and through
the waves. These are known as cyberspaces and they are the areas where cybercriminals perform
their intended tasks. Cyber security is generally a state of keeping a system safe from cyber
criminals. It involves practices and measures employed to ensure that a certain system is free
from un-authorized intruders (Cavelty, 2012).
There are different types of cybercrimes based on the manner in which they are carried out. One
type is Cyberextortion involving an attack or a threat to attack and demand a ransom pay to stop
it. Identity theft happens when such a thug steals the identity of another person and uses it to
access their personal accounts such as a bank account and steal from them. Credit card fraud is
also used widely when a malware is infiltrated in a retailer’s system and steal bank details of the
customers. Cyberespionage is another form of cybercrime where hackers gain access to
confidential information owned by the government and/or organizations.
Why should we capitalize on Cyber Security?
Cyber criminals normally intend to access a certain system and affect it for their own gain. Many
companies in the universe have lost their valuable data, money and other valuable possessions
through this. For example, in April 2017, Wonga (a payday loan company in the UK) suffered an
online data bleach and the information of about 270,000 customers was altered with (Russell,
2017). This hit their reputation very hard and had their brand value kneeling for the first time
after a very long time. This means that cybercrime is a reality and can cause such a huge dent to
big companies like Wonga. If these activities are destined for financial gain, the targeted party
will suffer financial loss. These activities can result to a system m...
