Psychology Career Path Explanations
Career Path 1: Psychology College Professor
The psychology college professor includes the acts of teaching psychology, conducting
research, writing, committee involvement, among other tasks (Sternberg, 2017). To be able to
educate others who share the same passion or interest in the psychology field could be
rewarding.
Description
Psychology Professors teach courses in psychology realm, such as clinical psychology,
developmental psychology, and psychological counseling. Psychology Professors include both
teachers primarily engaged in teaching and those who do a combination of teaching and research
(Sternberg, 2017).
Specific Duties
There exist various activities that the Psychology College Professor can do and amongst
these activities include; planning and evaluating the curricula, course material, and content.
Secondly, this career path ensures the maintenance of student attendance records and grades.
Furthermore, they supervise undergraduate teaching, research work, and internship; also the

research on a particular knowledge field is also in the job description, including advising
students, providing letters of recommendation for students, selection of curriculum supplies such

Job Prospects and Typical Salary Range
Some of the job prospects under this career path include lecture, instructor, professor,
teacher, counselor, adjunct professor, educational psychology professor, professor of
psychology, and psychology instructor among many others. The average salary of professionals
based in this career path range from $50,000 to $150,000 and this includes a new assistant
professor to a fully tenured professor. The average salary in 2013 - 2014 for all levels in
universities with doctoral programs was $80,983 for that year (Sternberg, 2017).
Advantages and Disadvantages
Academics provide a great deal of freedom in arranging what is done, when it is done,
and where a professor chooses to do so if they get their work done. They also have advantages
with the availability of continuing education. Professors can live in comfort financially but not
prosperously (Sternberg, 2017). Unfortunately, there can be a lot of politicking and bickering
involved which is a downside, and tends to be much squabbling about bureaucracy (Sternberg,
2017).
What I Learned That Was Surprising
What I found most surprising is how little professors teach opposed to high school
teacher's hours. They spend a significant amount of time preparing for their lectures, making
grading tests, consulting students, conducting research, writing letters of references, attending
meetings, communicating with other scholars, and peer reviewing (Sternberg, 2017).

Career Path 2: Counseling Psychologist
I find this career path rewarding by helping others along with my future interest in the
counseling practice. I have had great help in the past using counseling services to help me cope
with my well-being and alleviate feelings of distress. It gave me a new profound respect and how
well it helped me. It was also the start of building up my confidence to go back to school and
work towards bettering my future.

Job Prospects and Salary Range
Some of the job prospects under this career path include a psychologist who is widely
known, and the most common profession in counseling psychology include; counseling
psychologist, clinical psychologist, and clinician. Counseling psychologists can serve as a
professor in the academic world, counsel within schools, hospitals, and businesses. Salary
depends on years of experience. In 2009, the average salary was $81,000 (Sternberg, 2017).
Advantages and Disadvantages
The power of focusing on this path is that there is the potential of earning a high income
that ranges between $50 to $100. Additionally, one can have the ability to assist others to
overcome their problems and challenges. Another advantage is that there exist flexible working
hours, as some may work long hours others may work short hours during the day. Finally, there
is the ability and chance to work with new individuals every day. However, with the numerous
advantages also comes the disadvantages which include, stressful interaction with other
individuals. The schedule being flexible is an advantage but, in this case, it is also a disadvantage
since the working hours can sometimes be erratic meaning not conducted in a regular form
(What Are the Pros and Cons of a Career in Clinical Psychology?”, 2018).
