Tissue repair can be defined as the process where the functionality and architecture of a
tissue are restored following an injury. There are two completely separate processes involved in
tissue repair, namely regeneration and replacement. In regeneration of damaged tissues there is a
new growth that restores the damaged parts of the tissue to their normal conditions while
replacement refers to the type of healing where laying down of connective tissues is the healing
method. This happens especially with body tissues which have undergone severe injury.
We can thus discuss two types (or ways) through which tissue repair occurs, which are
regeneration and fibrosis. The type of healing of a particular damaged tissue will depend on the
severity of the injury and the type of tissue. Those tissues which are more capable of cell
proliferation tend to heal through regeneration. These types of tissues can be termed as
