Barriers Faced by Children with Disabilities in the Participation of Social Activities
Problem statement
Participation in social activities such as sports with other children not only promotes the
construction of social relationships among children with disabilities and those without
disabilities. The lack of exercise often results in multiple other health problems like obesity,
leads to psychological issues like depression or low self-esteem, and may aggravate the physical
status of children with disabilities. While some of these children may perform different social
and sports activities during the rehabilitation associated to the treatment of the impairment,
physicians have repeatedly observed how such participation reduces substantially to the point of
almost disappearing in most of the children with disabilities. As a result, only one-third of
children with physical or mental disabilities regularly participate in social activities like teambased sports (Jaarsma et al., 2014).
Only by knowing the barriers faced by children and understanding how they impact the
participation of children with disabilities on such activities will it be possible to design a strategy
that, in contrast with the previously implemented ones, will substantially increase the
participation of children in social events and improve their socialization.
Key findings summary
Jaarsma et al. (2014) evaluated how both personal and environmental variables could
either promote or refrain the participation of children in social activities such as team sports. In
this regard, they observed how children that had fun tended to participate in social activities
