Question Description

Assignment 1: Questions and Answers

As we conclude this course you should now realize that although there are many different valid ways of conducting research, the research question is what drives the methodology.

As you move forward in earning your doctoral degree make sure you keep your notes from this course for your reference.

This discussion is your last chance in this course to ask questions concerning research methods. Take a moment and post a question or an answer.

All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.

Research Methods: Reflection on Research Methods

In Module 8 we conclude the course. We have reviewed the three major research designs, quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method, and asked you to apply this knowledge to design a study of your own. Many of you may have started the course with a lot of questions and anxiety about whether you could conduct a study on your own. Hopefully by now you have gained a much better understanding of your preparedness in conducting research, the strengths you have, and the areas of growth you will need to continue working on in the future.

We asked you to share with each other what you had learned about yourself as a researcher and your strengths and weaknesses. After reading each others’ responses, we hope you also learn that you are not alone in experiencing challenges and obstacles when conducting research. No matter how prepared a student is, it is only normal to find barriers along the way. The important thing is to identify them when they happen and develop strategies to manage and overcome them. In their many years working with graduate students, Heppner and Heppner (2004) identified 8 prominent obstacles:

  1. Lack of time
  2. Lack of space
  3. Nonsupport from partners, families, and/or friends
  4. Lack of organization
  5. Emotional and psychological obstacles
  6. “Shoulds” students tell themselves, such as, “I should be able to think of a more creative topic than this one,” or “I should have started this task much earlier than it is due when I had more time”
  7. A poor working relationship with one’s advisor
  8. Lack of control with data collection and analyses. This may happen when you are on a research team to collect data together or if you are using part of the dataset provided by your advisor, etc.

You may have experienced one or all of the first six items at one point or the other during this course. As we conclude this course, think about what worked for you and what didn’t work for you. What were the challenges and what can you do differently so you don’t run into the same obstacles when you take the next research class or when you are working on your dissertation? Hopefully, at the end of your reflection, you will come up with several ideas to actively approach obstacles and take care of yourself in the process.

Lastly, we want to say congratulations for successfully completing this course. Not only you have gained knowledge and skills, and hopefully also self-awareness on conducting research, you now have a mini-methods section that you can take with you to the next research courses where you will learn about data analyses and interpretations.

We also would very much like to hear your thoughts, comments, and feedback on this course. We cannot improve without hearing from you. Please feel free to let us know how we can make this course better.

All written assignments and responses should follow APA rules for attributing sources.
