It has been said, that the cost to Medicare and even to society in general of healthcare of the elderly in this country is "way out of line". The actual spending of healthcare on the elderly constitutes approximately 1/3 of the total healthcare expenditures on less than 20% of the population. This would imply that more money is spent on time taking care of the elderly than any other age group.

Is the myth of the elderly true?

The myth about the spending on the elderly is false. The statement is due to the facts that
have been raised by various sources to indicate the high susceptibility rate to death is the element
which promotes the high cost of healthcare. Although most people in the society get sick
occasionally, the rate that the other population gets sick cannot be compared with the rate that
elderly in the society get sick. Notably, the elderly individuals are more exposed to getting sick
due to the wearing out of their immune systems thus leading them to be highly exposed to
