Introduction
Throughout their history, African Americans have encountered various challenges and
also made significant achievements in the struggle for equality and freedom. The history of
African Americans in the United States dates back to 1619 when 20 blacks arrived in the English
colony of Virginia. Since then, there are various event and achievements that have defined the
African-American history dating back to the Civil War (1861–1865) and the emancipation, the
abolition of slavery and the civil rights movement. Some of these milestones in the history of
blacks have been realized in various facets of American society including politics such as the
election of President Barack Obama as the first black American President. Nonetheless, despite
this progress, there remain various injustices that African Americans continue to face in modern
America including discrimination in the criminal justice system.
The poor colored peoples have long been at an extreme disadvantage in America
Analysis of the history of colored people demonstrates the severe disadvantage the
population has faced and continues to face in America. I agree with the Professor’s statement
