Running head: HAZARDOUS TOY 1 Hazardous Toy: Superduper Squirter and Shooter Name Institution HAZARDOUS TOY 2 Hazardous Toy: Super Duper Squirter and Shooter For more than a century, companies have produced many kinds of toys with developments being implemented in each series to maximize fun to the customers who are mostly children. However, many toys have exposed children and even adults to danger resulting in injuries and even deaths. Most of these dangers are brought about by manufacturing and design defects. Others are due to flawed warnings or even accidentally getting into the hands of children younger than the age the toy was meant for. Many of these toys have ended up being burned by the authorities from the market or further use by those already owning them. One of the hazardous toys is the super duper squirter and shooter. This toy shoots water at high velocity, but some children convert it into a spring-powered paintball and even chalk dart shooter which makes it more dangerous. The manufacturers recommend that these toys be used by children of age six and above. They also mention that safety glasses must be worn all the time these toys are being used but warn that the glasses are not a full guarantee of protection from the eye injury. The toys are meant for outside use and should not be aimed directly at other people. Toy guns post a real danger to children and even adults. Although many states have illegalized the manufacturing of toy guns that look like the real fire arm, some manufacturers still do it. In New York, for instance, a toy gun cannot be black, silver or blue. It instead should have bright neon colors and a strip of orange color around the barrel for everyone to recognize it as a toy. But this has been disobeyed over and over. An instance reported by New York Times of a twelve-year boy named Tamir Rice shot and killed by a police officer in 2014 for being mistaken to be holding a real gun while he was aiming his toy gun at someone (Randokph, 2015) is just one type of danger of buying a child replicas of the fire arms. HAZARDOUS TOY 3 These replicas have also been used to commit crime especially by teenagers. Only gun experts can identify some of these replicas as toys, and therefore they have been used to scare people and to rob them. A report by Police Executive Research Forum (1990) identified cases whereby police officers ended up killed by robbers after they lied that their weapons are toys tricking the officers into lowering theirs after which they were shot. The neon colored toy guns also harm children, especially on the face, ears, and eyes. Even when they have warnings against aiming directly at someone, children don't always follow what they are told. Sometimes these toys get into hands of very young children who do not understand the dangers and end up harming themselves or others. Although the hazards posed by these toys can be reduced by Consumer Product Safety Commission through the legitimate regulatory authority, the fun brought by these toys is not worth the risk. There are many other toys on the market that can make children happy and not expose them to danger. Parents should always prioritize their children's safety above fun.
