1. Self-development according to George Hebert Mead
George Hebert Mead is amongst the prominent figures in the history of American
philosophy. He was born in South Hadley, Massachusetts in February 1863 and died in Chicago,
Illinois in April 1931. He is well known for his theory on self. This theory was shaped by his
overall view of socialization as a lifelong process involving different people. He argued that self
is a product of social experience and an integral part of an individual personality. He viewed
development as a process comprising of two major aspects of self-awareness and self-image.
His study was a development of the works done by his predecessors such as Charles Cooley
