Introduction.
PCB’s which is the abbreviation of polychlorinated biphenyls is an artificial chemical
that was considered a breakthrough after its discovery in the twentieth century. Like most
herbicides and pesticides it is hard for PCB’s to break down easily and they turn into dangerous
dioxins when burned. Even though these harmful compounds are no longer being produced in
the United States, 30 years later their effects are still catastrophic on the planet and all forms of
life. All PCB’s are human made and have a similar structure and composition. Their structures
are made up of carbon, hydrogen and chlorine atoms. Due to the combination of this compounds,
this is what has influenced the harmfulness of the compound. PCB’s have different uses, but
mainly they are used for manufacturing various products such as paints surface coatings,
electrical equipment, flame retardants and many more (Hutzinger, 2018).
Distribution of PCB’s in the environment
Due to the chemical properties of PCB’s, their low relativity and high stability, this
makes them perfect for industrial use. As compared to many other organic chemicals, PCB's are
generally persistent in most of the environment slow to biodegrade in the environment as
compared to other chemicals. PCB’s can partition between the atmosphere and water; this is
because they have low vapor pressure and low water solubility. Also, once PCB’s are released
from the environment, they tend to divide into the most organic components of the environment.
This ability to divide and mix with the most organic component of the environment enables
PCB’s to soak up an organic component of the soil and sediments (Hutzinger, 2018). This reason
