Introduction to International Relations POLI 1150 ESSAY: Students will: ➢ Write ONE RESEARCH ESSAY (5 double-spaced, FONT SIZE 12, typewritten numbered pages long- about 1000 to 1500 words- NO MORE- and staple) on one of the topics listed below in the Essay Topics list. This format must be strictly compiled with. ➢ Anything used and/or copied from any source must be properly footnoted (referenced). A bibliography must also be appended to the paper. Failure to comply with this requirement will automatically entail a failing grade (i.e. “0”) for the paper. It may also be considered as plagiarism (see Anti-Plagiarism Appendix). ➢ Anything used and/or copied from any source must be properly documented (i.e. in a footnotes or endnotes format. *DO NOT USE parenthetical or “in-text” citations. * 5 Marks will be deducted for doing so. A bibliography of the sources used must also be attached to the paper. Please use the TURABIAN OR CHICAGO style of documentation. Internet sources may only be used in addition to at least 4 academic books/ referred or peer-reviewed articles excluding the course text, but not as a substitute for them. A web address should be provided where internet sources are used. ➢ Correct writing is a crucial factor in determining the equality of your essay since it ensures clarity in transmitting your ideas. As a rule, avoid using the colloquial, e.g. expressions such as “we all know” (feel, believe, hope, etc.) which imply a value laden (normative) attitude. Similarly, do not end the essay with either an overly optimistic or pessimistic note, e.g. “we will overcome”. Due on Week 8: ➢ Choose a peacekeeping operation and discuss it as a case study: Describe and analyse it and evaluate it success or failure. United Nation as an agency and multilateral organization is tasked with the duty of
ensuring prosperity, peace, and stability among nations. The network of the organization under
the UN develops an international support that eliminates and counters instances of terrorism, and
conflict among nations. Also, the organization through its branches ensures that human rights are
observed for all the citizens in the world, harmonization of global development and growth
goals, universal values and norms are respected thus reduction of dictators and other elements
destroying and harming others. Equally important, the UN operates and works in line the United
States global leadership goals. Therefore, the UN and the U.S complement each other. This
interaction has worked to reinforce bilateral relations, and international organizations thus
ensuring that significant agreements and deals are made. In this regard, the United Nations has
been able to achieve peaceful transitions in governments such as in Columbia, Yemen, and
Cyprus. Also, there has been able to deal with Ebola disaster, migrants and refugee crisis, and
conducting peacekeeping missions. However, despite the success, the United Nations has
challenges that make its operations ineffective. The challenges include used of obsolete structure
and practices in addressing issues, criticism on dealing with controversies such as abuse of
peacekeepers and sexual exploitation. Again, there are shortcomings in a disease outbreak,
inability to enhance sustainable peacekeeping missions and, scandals in the operation of the UN.
The United Nation challenges and can be countered and eliminated by having a complete
overhaul of the system and adopting new reforms thus ensuring that the goals, objectives, and
missions of UN in the world are effectively achieved.
