Picture this; you are in high school. Your father gets assigned to work in a different city,
and so you have to move. You are then forced to enroll in a new school. You walk to school the
first day and notice that the students don’t go to school with backpacks, they carry their books on
their hands. You also note that every person identifies with a particular group depending on their
personality. The class schedules are also a bit different from what you were used to in your
previous school. That is what culture is. Culture is a people’s way of life. Culture dictates how a
person should act. Culture is an essential aspect of life. This paper will look at what constitutes
culture, and why it is crucial.
There are plenty of cultures in the world. There are those that believe that God is the only
healer and so, whenever they are sick they pray instead of going to the hospital. They think they
can receive any form of treatment but cannot undergo a transplant or transfusion even if it is a life
and death situation. There are also those that disregard therapy. They don’t believe in people
unloading their emotional baggage on strangers. Instead, they provide any support system a person
may need to sort out their issues. Additionally, there are those that believe that women are weak
compared to men.
Cultures can be both good and bad. There are those that lead to a positive outcome while
others are destructive. In Africa for example, some communities condone Female Genital
Mutilation even after all the campaigns that have been done against it. There those that don’t
believe in male circumcision despite its medical benefits. Others felt that twins were an
