Genetically modified foods (GMO) are considered by most consumers to be bad for
several reasons that may include health, ethics, or environmental reasons. There exist
preconceived ideas that the altering of the genes of organisms and plants changes its properties
such that the product is no longer the original product but a new product by itself. There is also
the widespread idea that genetically modified foods may be bad for one’s health. This includes
ideas such as genetically modified food have high estrogen properties that make it undesirable
for regular consumption by men who need more testosterone than estrogen. This has caused the
United States to consider a federal law requiring companies to put a label on GMO foods starting
in the year 2020. Though many companies are against this, claiming that it might prevent
customers from buying the items, informing consumers of the contents within a product is the
right move for any country and market. This will however be a good move for the consumers
because they will be able to identify the genetically modified foods and will take them at their
own risk.
Consumers are against GMOs due to various reasons. The first is environmental concerns
which are brought about by increased use of toxic herbicides and pesticides that are seen to affect
the ecosystem. Most genetically modified crops are sprayed using herbicides such as glyphosate
whose residue is seen to have several side effects on any ecosystem. Since the products are
genetically modified, it means that they might not be able to survive normal conditions for the
normal plant. This is why harsh chemicals are used to ensure that they survive well and produce
well enough as per expectation. This has now become a major issue as some of the chemicals
are very harsh and are not fit for human consumption. People are afraid that, if they take these
products they might lead to diseases like cancer which is almost incurable. The constant
