Within the profession of leadership coaching, coaches generally function in one of two roles, as external coaches or internal coaches. External coaches typically work independently and are contracted by organizations to promote organizational, departmental, and/or individual change, among other things. On the contrary, internal coaches work within organizations, sometimes as leaders, managers, or human resource professionals, to help employees develop professionally, build leadership skills, enhance performance, and improve decision making. Suppose there is a need for a leadership coach within a company for which you have worked or currently work. Would you recommend an internal or external coach? How might their roles be similar and different? What are the benefits and limitations of each role?
