Running head: YVES SAINT LAURENT 1 Yves Saint Laurent Name Institution YVES SAINT LAURENT 2 Yves. St. Laurent was best known as a powerful European fashion designer who affected fashion from 1960 to the present day. He is viewed as being among the premier fashion designers in the twentieth century. The name is already synonymous to French fashion. Yves St Laurent is one of the people believed to have single-handedly changed the sense of fashion. His fashions won several awards. Below is an example of how Yves St. Laurent changed the sense of fashion in the 20th century. The following examples of his fashions left a mark in the history of women and a few men’s wears. Examples In the year 1960, Saint Laurent produced what he called the Beat collection. The collection was a unique black leather jacket embossed with crocodile pattern and lined in mink. The story Saint Laurent told as his inspiration unearthed the feeling that it was the first time, a fashion designer like him had been influenced by something youthful, the youth loved that. What followed after was amazing the youth and all the culture effects were obsessed by this kind of upheaval. During this time the design shakes the fashion world. Most youths of the age were addicts of this kind of fashion. However, the design did receive some criticism from the then religion which considered it rather sub-cultural and an undercurrent of the evil. This design was not picked to contest for any fashion style competition, but its effects had already shown by the huge following. The same year the house of Yves Saint Laurent was opened (Hoffmann & Lecamp, 2015. A second example of fashion that Saint Laurent sent down the runway and didn’t disappoint is the spring collection. He said the inspiration was from an Algerian dress that the YVES SAINT LAURENT 3 mother wore during his childhood. The fashion involved a fur coat broad with padded shoulders and a bright green hue that was standing out as a single peace. The collection was in some parts of the world referred to as liberation. The press basted it and accused the fashion of reviving the dark ages and bringing back, suffering and styles in the period of humanity. Therefore, the media branded it a bad taste. However, even with the influence of the media many still loved to associate with it. Even as many thought it echoed France collaboration, the fashion trended very well and proved significantly influential (Hoffmann & Lecamp, 2015). The third example of Saint Laurent connection that received recognition from the Vogue was also a classic wear. The editor-in-chief of Vogue, a company that specializes in writing about trending fashions Diana Vreeland awarded Saint Laurent for his new generation Robin hood collection. The collection featured thigh-high crocodile boots paired with oilskin tunics and leather-hooded caps. The idea of hooded leather cap irked the Dior and the religion again, since in a way through the media it was linked to the earlier Beat collection. Saint Laurent was already pushing couture to new extremes. However, his fashion was already receiving a cult following and therefore it was almost creating no sense of hating on his collections (Hoffmann & Lecamp, 2015). Another example of Saint Laurent fashion that helped invent the 20th-century wardrobe is the Deneuve. The Deneuve was used to dress the actor and model of the film Belle de Jour. The model was appreciative of the sense of style that Saint Laurent had. She, therefore, created a rapport with him that as she dressed for the rest of her career with Saint Laurent. In one of her confession, she recognizes him as one and the only person who had a real sense of fashion. For the design Deneuve, it hit very well and was liked across the world. It consisted of a vinyl trench coat and intertwined knitted sleeves. It also involved roses and a great muse that charmed over YVES SAINT LAURENT 4 the years. The Deneuve style was highly popularized. As time progressed the Laurent style was offered for sale and during this period the boutique had customers ask for an even shorter version of these trousers and jersey dresses which is common among Instagram pictures currently (Hess & Phillips, 2018). Conclusion The assumption that Saint Laurent dictated the current fashion and styles and the entire 20th-century function is logical. Considering the results of an auction organized by his business partner Pierre Barge, where over 350 million euros of his 700 are designed collection were sold. This was after his death showing how his brand was dear to a lot of people around the world. In Paris, he is considered the father of modern fashion and even in the world (Okonkwo, 2016). Even when he was receiving set-backs about his fashion and being rejected for particular run-way shows his fashion trends were still popular. Currently, even the see me through fashion used by many ladies is criticized by many religions however it is popular years later after the death of Saint Laurent. A clear proof of how Laurent influenced the current wardrobes (Moine, 2017). The story of Saint Laurent conveys a meaning that fashion is art. A belief which was made practical in the 20th century. It is not coincident that many of the clothes on the runway today have borrowed in a way from Saint Laurent imagined, designed and created earlier fashions from Saint Laurent.
