History of Ginger
Ginger is one of the most popular and influential spices across the world. Ginger was first
discovered in the southern part of ancient China about 5000 years ago. The spice is known to
have a fascinating history where it boasts many uses and commonly known to hold many cultural
beliefs and traditions (Xizhen, Jinfeng, & Xia, 2016). At around 13th century, ginger was one of
the most traded commodity hence many people from different regions started farming the plant
across the world. By the 15th century, ginger had reached as far as the Caribbean and East Africa.
Currently, India is the biggest exporter of ginger across the globe.
Ginger Symbolism
Almost all spices symbolize different things from one region to another. For instance, in
Hawaii ginger signifies royalty since many people believe that it is effective on its work of
healing compared to other spices. Other symbols that ginger represents include success, wealth,
and power (Xizhen et al., 2016). This statement can be supported by the fact that the spice was
very highly valued and it played was once close to the value of other expensive commodities
such as silver and gold in the 14th century. Due to its high value, the producers of ginger had
accumulated a lot of wealth which in return resulted to them gaining power in the society.
Methods of Using Ginger in Different Cultures
In India ginger is a common food ingredient. Most users of ginger in India use it to make
pulse and lentil curries. Also, they also use the ginger as a spice for coffee and tea. Another use
of ginger in India is that the spice is used in making of thick gravies which are commonly
applied in the recipe of cooking chicken curry (Ravindran & Babu, 2016).
