Clothing plays an masquerade and transforming role in both story and film, it has multi-function which support Yentl passing as man, against the rule and get spiritual power. In Singer's story, clothes become the element that makes the supposed "natural" biological gender determination true. Singer writes about Yentl’s dream confusion which about Yentl finds out she falls in love with Avigdor when she disguises as man for studying Torah. The quote “In her dream she had been at the same time a man and a woman, wearing both a woman’s bodice and a man’s fringed garment.” from the story creates mental image for the audience. The way of clothing could “put on” new identities on one person. Woman’s bodice and man’s fringed garment are two gender typical garments which suppose not be wear on one person at same time by convention. Singer uses this imagery device to show Yentl’s inner conflict about gender identities mixed up through this physical androgynism dressing style. In Streisand’s film, the director actually depict this scene when Yentl takes off her fringed outwear and wears the corset inside. It is interesting that the directer didn't shoot the footage directly on Yentl, she used the mirror to reflect Yentl instead. This The mirror reflection questions about her real identity. In the story, Singer pushes his idea about gender identity conflict further by saying “Even the soul was perplexed, finding itself incarnate in a strange body.” which reflect Yentl is completely baffled and filled with uncertainty. Yentle’s father mentions “Yentl——you have the soul of a man.” at the beginning of the story. The soul is now perplexed which noncorresponding with her primary identity to has a “soul of a man”. Although Yentl has a female identity biologically, she rejects her femininity due to regulations prohibiting women from obtaining an education. Although men’s clothes allow Yentl to assume a masculine identity, she fall into her confusion about "natural" biological gender. Singer emphasizes the strict separation of the sexes in the society of Bechev, The way Yentl dressing can be reflected as she against the rule. There is a local market scene at the beginning of the film, the way of women and men dressing is completely distinctive. Women wears colorless shirt and long skirt which reaches to the ankle. The collar is above neckline, it avoid women to reveal any body skin. All the women wear same type of the clothing no matter which social class they are, the only vibrations are the fabric and collar design. Singer mentions “When Yentl’s father slept, she would dress up in his trousers, his fringed garment” to imply Yentl’s desire of learning by masquerade in man’s clothes. Jewish people wear specific garments during prayer. Certain prayer fringed garment can traditionally only be worn by men. So when Yentl wear her father’s prayer shawl, it is totally against the rule. Although Yentl’s father is open-mindedness and teaches Yentl Torah secretly, under the pressure of patriarchy society, Yentl can only try to put on her father’s fringed garment when her father slept. The film version also shows Yentl takes out her father’s prayer shawl and wraps herself in it. The light from the lamp behind her revealing an unmistakably feminine silhouette under the ritual garment. Wearing man’s clothes is scandalous because this action subverted the convention and the social order. Clothing has functioned to reify hierarchies of sex, women should wear suitable and conservative clothing to hiding their sexuality. Clothing plays a masquerade role which conceal Yentl’s physical female identity. After Yentl’s father died, Yentl dresses in male’s clothing all the time when she appears in the public for studying Torah. In the story, Avigdor thought “What a strange power there is in clothing’ which indicates he never realize Anshel (Yentl) is actually a women. In the film, As Anshel, Yentl takes her clothes off rarely and show her feminine features. Yental wears a scarf to cover the fact that she doesn’t have Adam’s apple in Bechev, other students are all wear regular shirt collar. And when the tailor wants to customize the pants and suit for Yentl and Hadass’s wedding, he asked Yentl to take off the pants. Yentl asked them to leave the room then take off the pants. This action imply she is afraid her biological identity expose. Torah prohibits dressing in clothing of the opposite. Woman wears the clothes of a man is inappropriate. If Yentl wants receive education, she had to conceal her biological gender feature. Clothing is one of the significant elements supports Yentl masquerade and transforming, during her receive education. Clothes not only conceal Yentl’s physical female identity and shows Yentl’s "natural" biological gender desire, but also emphasizes the strict separation of the sexes in the society of Bechev and how Yentl against the rule. Quote “In her dream she had been at the same time a man and a woman, wearing both a woman’s bodice and a man’s fringed garment.” “Even the soul was perplexed, finding itself incarnate in a strange body.” “Yentl——you have the soul of a man.” “When Yentl’s father slept, she would dress up in his trousers, his fringed garment” “What a strange power there is in clothing’
