Writing Prompt: I chose to write about prompt #1. "Write an analysis of a key character in a literary work." I will write about Eudora Welty's, "A Worn Path", and the main character, Pheonix's dedication to her grandson even though she's traveling through natural obstacles as well as her own physical limitations. Working Thesis and first paragraph: Heroes/heroines are born on daily basis, but not all of them can go all over the world or even manage to handle difficult situations. They do not need to be extra Ordinary people, but one needs to know where to look for them. It depends on what a person does to be considered a hero/heroine such as a grandmother walking 50 miles by foot to get medicine for her sick grandson. This is precisely what Phoenix Jackson did in the short story “A Worn Path.” Therefore, it can be argued that Phoenix Jackson's love of her grandson not only overcomes the difficulties which come her way as she walks to get medication for him but also makes her emerge a heroine whom people can look up to. Throughout the story, Phoenix (the grandmother) emerges to be a heroine by displaying unimaginable characters such as humble, caring and determined despite her old age. A humble southern attitude is visible in her conduct. Being a black American woman at the time when the society was racially divided, she did not manage to get a formal education. This makes her to uses straightforward grammar to communicate with her age mates. Phoenix's simplicity is evident in the funny ways in which she conversed even with inanimate objects. The simple way in which she speaks is evident when she states, “my senses are gone. I too old, I the oldest people I ever know” (Welty, 1999). Phoenix is visibly poor, but she makes long trips to get medicine for her grandson. This shows how she is determined and values the life of her grandson. Phoenix comes out a strong lady who despite the difficulties stood the test of time. At times during her long trips, she mutters to herself to remain self-occupied (Welty, 1999).
