Description

This is a 10-page essay in which you will reflect upon each of the chapter themes in Why Evolution Is True. It should include reflections on your development and understanding of what evolution is and is not. It should include your personal journey of discovery related to the concept of evolution. It should also include philosophical, theological, and sociological reflections as well as a demonstration of a scientific understanding of evolution. Additionally, you should critique and evaluate the ideas presented in the book using your scientific understanding of the process of evolution.

WHY EVOLUTION IS TRUE

Introduction

Contrary to common misconceptions, evolution theory did not originate with Darwin.
Rather, the idea had been around before Darwin, and had been advanced by Darwin’s
godfathers including Erasmus who had toyed with the idea before abandoning it. However,
after Darwin’s long argument on the topic, it was adopted as a scientific theory which became
a subject for debates and was now being taught in schools. During his young days, Darwin
studied creatures and their distribution across the world, and reached to a conclusion that all
living organisms are related as they have a shared ancestor. The idea of evolution is that
species of organisms and their populations change overtime. As per Darwin’s controversial
book’ On the Origin of Species’, he argues that species evolve and undergo modification, but
they can all trace their origin to a common ancestor. His theory of evolution is based on the
concept of natural selection, through which organisms adopt more survival traits. Natural
selection is based on the premise that; since resources are limited in nature, organisms which
have heritable traits which favor reproduction are more likely to survive, hence they leave
more offspring compared to their peers, causing an increase in frequency of their population.
This requirement to survival ensures that organisms are well suited over time, thus natural
selection is dependent on heritable variations of the group. When populations migrate from
one area, new traits enter the genetic pool, and as they adapt, species reproduce with one
another, leading to creation of an entirely new species which is able to survive the new
environment. In his book ‘Why Evolution is true’, Coyne argues that evolution is a fact and
so is Darwin’s theory of natural selection.

Personal position on evolution
The book captures Coyne’s arguments in favor of Evolution, which are mostly
supported by Charles Darwin’s views on Evolution and natural selection. Coyne argues that
Evolution is a fact(Coyne, 2009).However, even though the theory is extensively supported
by most scientific findings, some of his arguments, as well as Darwin’s arguments, are
unsupported, hence their claims cannot be classified as facts, but rather as a theory which is
still subject to debate.
Even though he presents some scientifically supported arguments, some of the
arguments stated have been disproved over the years, hence for evolution to be termed as a
fact, it has to be supported by more scientific findings. Since a fact is a statement on objective
and actual claims, the term cannot be used to describe the theory of evolution and how things
came to be. Rather, theory is a more befitting description since most of the arguments are yet
to be proven. This therefore leaves the issue debatable because there has not been a certain
scientific proof on biological changes over generations.
However, even though it should be classified as a theory, evolution is still very
dominant over other schools of thought since most scientists have used very compelling
arguments in their support of Darwin’s arguments.
Despite being based on proven facts, the theory of evolution as well as Darwin’s
arguments on natural selections have not been established as facts, hence are not beyond
debate. Darwinism, as the evolution theory is still referred today despite having been
advanced beyond Darwin’s arguments, has been studied further beyond Darwin’s theory, as it
incorporates aspects of DNA and mutations which did not exist during Darwin’s era. This
continuous study of advancements implies that the theory is still a subject of study, hence
