Psychology in the News Assignment
Purpose:
This assignment is designed to get you critically thinking and writing about how psychological issues are presented in the popular media. Magazine, newspaper, radio and television accounts of psychological phenomena often are presented more to attract an audience than to provide fully accurate information.
Task:
For this assignment you will compile a portfolio of media objects and reflection papers.
Step 1:
To complete this assignment, you will need to select five recent (within the past six months) media items. These can be magazine articles, newspaper articles, advertisements, commercials, radio broadcasts, or television news stories. For audio or visual items describe the item as closely as possible (e.g., by transcribing the script of a radio ad) or include a link to the item.
Step 2:
For each item, include a brief essay–one to two pages, double-spaced typing–on the connections between the media item and material from the course text or class. It’s essential to focus on the connections between the media item and psychological theories or research evidence.
Step 3:
For each item, search the library database using relevant keywords for your topic for at least one peer-reviewed article to support your ideas. Psychology cuts across many disciplines so feel free to explore journals in other areas such as business, education, health, and criminal justice.
Tip: When conducting your search in the library include a theory or principle plus a topic (i.e. Body Dysmorphic Disorder and Adolescents). Use alternative key words to improve your chances of finding relevant articles and create a specific search statement to help narrow your results." The example might be something like "("Body Dysmorphic Disorder" OR BDD) AND (adolescen* OR teen*)"
Step 4:
Submit final draft to your assignment folder.
Criteria:

Washington Post on September 20 2018: “Five Myths About Personality Tests”
The article by Emre (2018) provides a definition on personality that was held onto in the
13th century. During the time, personality was regarded as the quality and character of a human
being. By the 19th and 20th century, there was the rise of personality tests that helped to categorize
human beings into different classes in line with the various personalities that they had. However,
the author agrees to the idea that there are various myths that exist within the practice of personality
tests which impact negatively on how they are viewed. The main myth that the article provides is
that personality is innate. The view that personality is an born from within the person is misguided.
It normally stems from both the genetic makeup of a person and the different experiences that such
a person normally has.
Personality is obtained from various factors. One of them relates to the general interaction
that a person normally has with his immediate environment. As shown in trying to understand the
relationship that exists between personality disorder and aggression, Gilbert et al. (2015) noted
that the environment in which a person lives presents a chance to shape the kind of behavior that
he is likely to have. For instance, people who live in highly volatile societies are likely to develop
a personality disorder. A volatile society could be one that is characterized with domestic violence.
Over time, such people tend to develop some level of aggression in their behavior. They hold the
view that it is through being aggressive in the interactions that they have with other people that
they stand the chance to protect themselves effectively. Such people, therefore, need the support
of others. They need to be shown both love and care. It is through the application of such elements
that they identify with the need to warm up to others. Such people also realize the intricate role
that they play in being part of the society in which they live.
