Comparing and Contrasting 3 Short Stories
The "Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe, "The Yellow Wallpaper" by Charlotte
Gilman, and "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne are largely motivated by
desires to portray revenge as a driving force for people to settle old scores. The settings in stories
influence the characters, and enhance the development of the plot and central themes. Just like in
"Young Goodman Brown", "Cask of Amontillado" has uses sophisticated indirect and direct
factors, symbolism, and irony to support the theme of revenge. In the opening line of "Cask of
Amontillado", readers are introduced to the statement “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had
borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge" (Poe 1). This quote
that clearly depicts that Montresor wants revenge, not for his injuries, but for the insult. By the
use of this statement, Poe has managed to attract the attention of the readers toward the story.
