This story is set in the American South, more precisely in the city Jefferson, Mississippi, in the southern county of Yoknapatawpha. An example in the text that shows that is, when Emily answered to the Colonel "I received a paper, yes," Miss Emily said. "Perhaps he considers himself the sheriff . . . I have no taxes in Jefferson."(2).Litterally, there is no supernatural character in the story even if the story has been labeled as a "Ghost story" because Emily lived in her own mind without considering the outside world.There is irony present in the story, three types of irony are shown : verbal, dramatic and irational. One example of verbal irony would be when Colonel Sartoris promises to Emily's dad he would not have to pay taxes if they loan the town money and when the new Mayor tries to collect the taxes, Emily tells him to refer back to colonel sartoris but the colonel has been dead 10 years ago (2-3).It is ironic becuase she knows that the mayor could not talk to a dead man.Yes, in the story we can see that William Faulkner is making a call for change. That habit of people for following tradition has to change. An example is the resistance Emily had toward change despite modernization around her. The clear example is the house where Emily was living , it looked old- fashioned but Emily refused to do some changes because of traditions "...only Miss Emily's house was left, lifting its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps-an eyesore among eyesores.''(1). The overall theme for this story is isolation, privacy and the conflict between past and change.Melanie Dean Discussion 5 "A Rose for Emily"William Faulkner's short story "A Rose for Emily" takes place in the American South of Jefferson, Mississippi. The story is about a young girl named Emily Grierson who is sheltered from the world by her father Mr. Grierson. When her father passed away it took a huge toll on Emily. A gentleman by the name of Homer Barron visits Emily's house one day and she invites him in, little did he know that Emily was planning on poisoning him so she would never have to be alone again. When Homer died Emily placed his deceased body in the bedroom upstairs where his body would decompose. Her fathers corpse was also kept in her home. I do not believe there are supernatural characters present in the story, however Faulkner does refer this short story to a "ghost story" because Emily is not your average character since she keeps dead corpses in her home. Verbal irony happens when Emily insists she will not be paying taxes like the rest of the town because her father had an agreement with Colonel Sartoris when he was still alive that he would not have to pay taxes if he loaned the town money. I do believe there is a call for change in the South and I believe the theme would be fear of change. Emily had a hard time living a different life from the one she shared with her father, so when asked about her fathers passing she replied "her father was not dead" and kept that lie for 3 days until the law was going to get involved and she then Emily broke down. Emily didn't want things to change but in the end her fathers corpse was removed and a quick burial took place.
