The TOPIC I chose is Smoking in public places has to be banned Part I: (Outline) You already have a topic that you have been researching and looking at multiple perspectives already. You will now take that topic and draft a case outline based on the perspective you are taking with your topic (which side you're on). Fill in the outline below using your topic and previous research (for more information, see page 228): 1. A working thesis: 2. List of evidence you can use: 3. Specific audience profile (age, gender, and economic status? Interests, beliefs, and values?): 4. What must you defend to make sure your thesis is valid: 5. What reasons can you use to defend your thesis: 6. What order should your reasons be in? Experiment with order: Part II: (Essay) To write about 2 pages persuading an audience of your peers to do something of your choosing. You can pick the topic, just make sure you have made a strong case, looked for faulty assumptions, have a strong voice as a writer, and you have a guiding plan. You can consider the opposing viewpoint, but make sure you treat them with respect and show why your side of the debate is better. I would use the topic that will eventually be your final exam. That way, you just have to add more resources and make sure you have a good counterargument to have a complete paper for the final exam. When I grade your paper, I will be looking for: • A strong start to your paper. How you open the paper makes a big difference Connect to the topic in some form (the introduction is a good place to do this as engaging with the topic is important for ethos) • background information that is included as evidence or to support the claim; use MLA documentation for this (in-text and a Works Cited page) • counterarguments that address opposing viewpoints (upfront if the readers will have a tough time agreeing with your point; if the readers won't be too dedicated to the opposite view, then you can wait until after you make your case to include the counterarguments, and then only do this sparingly) good organization of reasons • possible use of visuals (p. 256); if you borrow the visuals, you must cite them using MLA documentation (in-text as captions and on the works cited page) • a powerful conclusion A revision checklist for this paper appears on page 257. Please make sure you revise and edit for clarity, coherence, and voice. Expectations will be high for this paper. Audience/Tone: LS-UP peers are your audience to consider. Please keep your tone scholarly and elevate your language where possible. Standard English rules apply.

Smoking in Public Should Be Banned
Introduction
Despite the health issues associated with smoking, studies have confirmed that the
number of smokers has increased over the past years. Smoking just like any other life choices is
an individual’s decision and once starts the habit it becomes addictive and hard to quit. Since
smoking is legal therefore the government or third parties are not at liberty to dictate to smokers
on how and when to stop smoking is their personal choice to make. However, according to
scientific research, this undertaking does not only affect smokers negatively but it also has an
adverse impact on the people around them and these individuals can suffer the same fate similar
to real smokers; therefore smoking in public places should be banned.
Smoking in public does not only affects nonsmokers’ health, ...
