The 13th Amendment was enacted in 1865 and ended slavery in the United States, giving
African Americans a newly found freedom. After emancipation, African Americans living in the
South no longer faced the brutalities they faced in the past, and acquired freedom publicly and in
private. However, there was difficulty with attempting to cultivate a life after slavery. Although
slavery had ended, African Americans still faced white race prejudices, for instance Black
Codes. These were laws enacted that granted African Americans certain rights while at the same
time denying them some rights like serving in the military or in juries. The Black Codes required
African Americans farmers and tenant farmers to have labor contracts signed with White
landowners (Starkey, 2005). Although most Southern African Americans were free, the
conditions they lived in were desperate. They lacked education and wages during the slave...
