Outline and Draft Requirements

The following requirements must be met for both outlines and drafts

1. A clear thesis statement, located in the Introduction

Good writing has a point. Great writing has a clear point at its core that guides every element of the work. Your outline and draft must have a clear, identifiable, and debatable thesis statement present in the introduction paragraph. This will help you to find your way with your writing and guide every step of your writing process. Outlines and drafts without a thesis will lose will lose three (3) points from the total score.

2. Substantial Introduction, Body, and Conclusion paragraphs sections with at least 4 planned sentences

Outlines and drafts may not be perfect, but they should be substantial. You want to make every effort to get your outline and draft as close as possible to complete. This will help you to move through the writing process, and it may prevent you from cramming when writing your final draft. Outlines and drafts with incomplete (less than four planned sentences) or missing paragraphs will lose three (3) points from the total score.

Outlines Requirements

To earn 10 points for your outline, your outline must meet the following requirements:

  • 1-2 pages in length for assignments under 800 words
  • 3 pages in length for assignments over 800 words
  • Arranged in alphanumeric format with headings for Introduction, Body, and Conclusion Paragraphs. Outlines that are not alphanumerically structured will lose five (5) points.
  • At least four (4) lettered/numbered/bulleted sentences for each paragraph
  • Sentences must be complete and contain at least one independent clause
  • Any sources used must be properly cited in-text according to your chosen citation style
  • Appropriate heading and headers for your chosen citation style

Draft Requirements

To earn 10 points for your draft, your draft must meet the following requirements

  • 300-400 words required for essays under 800 words
  • 500-600 words required for essays over 800 words
  • Paragraphs must be written in prose style and properly indented. No numbering or bulleting is allowed on drafts.
  • Works Cited or References page with any sources used must be included
  • Any sources used must be properly cited in-text according to your chosen citation style
  • Appropriate heading and headers for your chosen citation style

Outlines and drafts should also be brought to class, in print or digital form, for Peer Review Workshop Days so that you can participate in our workshopping activities. See syllabus for planned schedule of workshop days.
