TRANSPORT EQUIPMENT MANUFACTURING

2

Introduction
Tracing through Canadian history, transport has been a factor in the development of
the country bringing together the economy over extensive geographical locations and creating
strong trade associations globally. Over the last few years, among the forces d riving and
shaping transport and the economy of Canada has been globalization.
The Transport Equipment Manufacturing Sector
The Canadian transport equipment manufacturing sector is comprised of subsectors
which are primarily involved in the manufacture of equipment that is used for transporting
goods and people (Wee et al, 2013). Usually, there are modes that form the basis of industrial
establishment in the transport equipment manufacturing sector. They include road, air, water,
and rail. Particularly, there are three industries in Canada that manufacture road transport
equipment. Involving manufacture of complete vehicles, manufacture of trailer and parts, and
vehicle bodies. Industries engaging in rebuilding parts and equipment are produced in the
same industry since they engage in the manufacture of new products.
Assembling components that are usually bought from sub-assemblies represent the
main operations of this manufacturing sector. Additional processes that are carried out in this
sector include forming, bending, machining, welding and assembly of plastics or metal to
make parts used in the sub-assemblies where they are further developed into finished
equipment by the rest of the industries within the sector. Although several of these
manufacturing processes may be common to other equipment and machinery industries, this
sector is regarded as entire subsector considering that it is of great economic importance to
the American Continent. Perhaps, NAICS is comprised of industrial groups that manufacture
each mode of transport i.e. rail, air, water, and road. Usually, industries that only manufacture
parts of the transport equipment deserve a warrant to exist as separate groups.

Particularly, the NAICS subsector includes activities such as rebuilding parts of
motor vehicles based within the factories that are partly in manipulated metal establishments
and wholesaling according to the Canadian classification. As a result, hardware for
transportation equipment is classified in the fabricated manufacture of metallic products by
NAICS whereas Canada classifies them in the manufacture of transport equipment.
Economic History
In the past few years, Canadian transport equipment manufacturing industries have
faced adamant problems. As a result, the financial crisis and the great recession that occurred
worldwide led to a decline in the Canadian Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by four and a half
percent although the exports declined by more than sixteen percent. Consequently, the
transport sector witnessed a drop of seven percent in their operations. For instance, ...
