Introduction
The criminal Justice system is a very critical branch of the government particularly in
ensuring the safety and security of the people while providing justice to all. However, various
policies influence the way the justice system operates. This paper determines the effects of the
mandatory minimum sentencing on the drugs and substance abusers. It is apparent that
enhancing the war against substance abuse in the United States is essential. Nonetheless, the
mandatory minimum sentencing is seen to have unbearable effects among the offenders. It is
clear that the policy compels the jurists to make long and distressing sentences that affect the
lives of the felonies and the practice of the law. It is notable that the intention of the mandatory
minimum is to restrict the number of the drug and substance abusers in the United States. This
paper determines that the mandatory minimum policy on the convictions of the drugs and
substance abusers limits the judges’ authority and discretion in making their judgments in a
manner that would provide justice to both the felonies and the other community. In fact, the latter
affects the entire justice system’s ability to provide the ultimate corrective sentencing to the
delinquents while providing a chance for the lawbreakers to seek for pleas particularly to help
them avoid the trials.
