Definition/Characteristics
Trait leadership can be described as
a theory that tries to explain the
qualities and traits that an individual
must have in order to be a great
leader. However, trait theories
assume that people take after certain
traits and qualities that make them to
better leaders. Specifically, trait
theories try to explain why some
particular behavioral characteristics
or personality is common among
successful leaders.
Traits like courage, extroversion,
and self-confidence among others
could potentially be linked to
successful leaders. The challenge
that still exists in defining
characteristics of trait leadership is
how we can identify/explain people
who possess these characteristics
considering that we have a large
number of people who possess these
characteristics yet these individuals
have never attempted to seek for a
position in leadership. Whereas
there are individuals that lack this
characteristic yet they have
successfully made to leadership.

Examples
There are numerous examples of trait

demonstrated over time. A good
example is from the television show

aircraft spits apart in the mid-air and
crash lands where each section of the
aircraft lands in two sides of an island
in the Pacific Ocean. Through this
series we get to identify several
leadership traits including
determination, self-confidence,
integrity, intelligence, and sociability
in which the group’s respective
leaders displayed, they have been
named Sun, Jack, and Eko.
Another example of trait leadership is
Abraham Lincoln who is the 16th
president of the United States of
America. He has been described as a
man who led with passion, he was
passionate for the attainment of civil
rights and equality. He led the people
with moral aptitude and garnered
sympathy for the minorities. He was
a dedicated and passionate leader
with the vision of attainment of
egalitarianism throughout the United
