Diversity and Race Assignment: How Jazz Musicians were affected by Diversity and Race Issues in American Society in the 20thCentury.
Choose one of the following jazz artists/groups to research the way(s) in which diversity played a role in their interactions with American society in the earlier part of the 20th century (1900’s -1960’s.) This could include employment issues - performance opportunities, equal treatment, touring issues – hotels, travel options, etc., criminal justice issues (cabaret cards, arrests, drug use-targeting of musicians and neighborhoods, etc.) and other societal issues of the day. Learn how they responded (or were forced to respond) to these issues and how they involved themselves in issues of civil rights, race and diversity, equal treatment for all races. Discuss how they may have used their music or status in the entertainment industry to address these issues.

How diversity affected the artist(s) interaction with society during their historical
period in America
Diversity refers to a situation where one understands each other`s difference and
recognizes his uniqueness as well as the individual dissimilarities. This can be in terms of race,
gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age, religious beliefs, socio-economic beliefs, political
beliefs, and physical abilities. On the other hand, race is a situation where human beings are
grouped based on their social qualities or on shared physical abilities, which are categorized and
seen as distinct in society. In the past, the race was differentiated through the speaking of the
same language and later denoted to national affiliation and finally physical traits.
Jazz music was also affected by diversity because it was a musical style that influenced
the African tradition. The jazz faced a lot of challenges in terms of growth of their music since

they were not given opportunity to reach all people in the US compared to other music that
originate from American traditions. This gave jazz music artists a hard time to penetrate into the
market.
