Jazz is a hybrid music which is formed from incorporating the existing and local musical
styles. The music relies on improvising of rhythmic urgency. Jazz musicians express themselves
by inventing and creating music on the spot. They do this by changing the melodies
rhythmically, and its rhythm is always syncopated and might also be polyrhythmic which occurs
when multiple, contrasting rhythms occurs at the same moment. The jazz music was developed
by African Americans, and it was influenced by the European harmonic organization and the
African beats. Jazz was developed from ragtime and blues. Jazz had been continuously evolving
since its beginning in the 20th century; it has expanded, changed the music industry. The music
has passed through several distinct phases in its development process. The phases include the
New Orleans style followed by the free jazz (Evans, 2015). Those musicians who became great
jazz musicians like Aaron Copland and Igor Stravinsky were all attracted by its influential
sounds and resonances and the strange effects of jazz. In my article, I am going to talk about
Louis Armstrong who was a black musician who rose the stardom in the 20 th century and how
diversity played a role in the musician’s interaction with the American society in the early 20th
century (Evans, 2015).
