Introduction
CP All Company Limited was started by Charoen Pokphand Group in 1988 to run
convenience Thailand's store business, which was under the trademark of 7-Eleven. The business
was given it license of using the 7-Eleven trademark in 1989 in the USA, where the 7-Eleven
branch at Thailand opened at Patpong Road. The company has its humble beginning from a
small shop selling seeds called Chia Tai started by Chinese brothers in 1921. Originally, the shop
had its headquarters in Shantou, which later build seed outlets network with branches in Hong
Kong, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Singapore, and Taipei.
The traces of Charoen Pokphand are dated back in 1921, initiated by the Chinese
brothers’ immigration Chia Siew Whooy and Chia Ek Chor, who later established the Chi Tai
Chueng seed store during King Rama VI reign in Bangkok’s Chinatown. They did their business
through importing vegetables and seeds from China as they exported eggs and pigs to Hong
Kong. The two siblings, who were by then penniless were able to get enough capital for their
seeds in starting their small seed shop. In their first business existence years, the two siblings
had undergone different experiments in finding their personal business niche. By the start of the
1950s, they shop had made connections in exporting animal feeds, specifically, chicken feeds,
although the business faced some struggles until 1970s. This is when Bangkok Bank to fully
control a chicken farm that was bankrupt. Later, the shop made specializations in buying

distribution chickens to restaurants and grocers with vertical strategy integration of operations of
feed milling together with chicken breeding. By the end of 1969, CP All had made an annual
turnover of about $ 1-2 million.
In 2013, Charoen Pokphand received the clearance in buying the Chinese HSBC’s stake
of Ping Insurance. By May 2013 instead of lacking a loan from the Development Bank of China,
HSBC decided to sell the HK$59 company share of about 15.7 percent stake to the Group
Charoen Pokphand. In 2014, CP All gave a report showing a tie-up together with Japanese
Itochu general trading corporation under which the CP All Company had acquired the 4.9
percent listed Itochu’s US41 billion stocks, wherein return Itochu needed about 25 percent Honk
Kong s CP listed group company stake, CP All for more than US$854 million. The overall
transaction moved CP Company to the third position in Itochu list of the largest stakeholders,
thus it was marketed in form of an alliance amongst the present conglomerates with the aim of
developing trading opportunities of international food. In 2015, Itochu and CP reported that they
would together the China’s US410.5 billion stake in CITIC limited that formed the trilateral
alliance with CP and Itochu having CITIC’s stock 10 percent, which was the highest foreign
investments on a company that was owned by China (Tsoulfas and Pappis, 127).
Causes for Change
In reference to the Kotter’s 8 step change model, CP All had to change for the company to
grow. This was as a result of lack of all information related the CP All shares the any prospective
